Abuse of The Ages Child abuse and neglect is a national problem which has increased to epidemic proportions in the United States. More than 2.5 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States annually with over hundreds of deaths related to child abuse that has been reported each year. In 2013, an estimation of 1,520 children died from abuse in the United States. In that same year, Children’s Advocacy Centers around the country had served nearly 295,000 child victims of abuse, providing victim with support to these children and their families. Moving to 2014 this number was maxed to over 315,000. An estimation of 679,000 children were victims of abuse. There were 47 out of the 50 states that reported approximately 3.1 million children who received preventative services from Child Protective Services agencies in the United States. In the first year of a child s life it was the highest rate of victimization of 23.1 per 1,000 children in the national populatio n of the same age. Of the children who experienced abuse, nearly 80% sufficer neglect; 18% suffered physical abuse; and 9% suffered sexual abuse. Physical abuse is a non-accidental trauma or physical injury caused by beating, punching, kicking, burning, biting or otherwise harming a child, physical abuse is the most visible form of child maltreatment. It was left untitled by the poet therefore the first line of the poem became the title. The speaker in the poem begins by telling the reader to â€Å"not go gentle into that good night† line 1 using night as a metaphor for death. Thomas uses the image of a wave â€Å"last wave by, crying how bright† line 7 about to crash into the shore or, die. As men approach the shore of life they cry out how much more fulfilling life could have been if they had been allowed to live longer. Their lives would be so much richer if they were allowed to dance in the â€Å"green bay. † The green bay representing life because it is full of living things such as algae and seaweed. However their future actions â€Å"frail deeds† will not be able to come to fruition because they must die. Stanza four speaks of â€Å"wild men† those who grab life by the horns and live it to the fullest â€Å"wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight† line 10 only to discover that the life they lived so charismatically is slowly oming to and end as they wither with age. The â€Å"sun† in line 10 represents the beauty that exists in the world, and â€Å"flight† as in across the sky symbolizes the life span that moves quickly to the sunset of our days. In opening with â€Å"Grave men, near death, who see with blinding light† line 13 in stanza five Thomas uses the pun â€Å"grave† to speak of the seriousness of a dying man. As men grow olde r they begin to lose the sense of sight, however the speaker states they will â€Å"see with blinding light. line 13 Even though they may be suffering from loss of physical sight they can see with perfect clarity that end is near and while they may not be in control of the timing of their death they certainly choose the manner in which they handle it. The speaker suggests they â€Å"blaze like meteors† line 14 and go out with a bang instead of giving into to death without a fight. Finally in the last stanza of the poem we get to the heart of the matter. The speaker is addressing his father who is on the verge of death. The father’s death is devastating and the speaker implores him to fight passionately against it and leave this life heroically. The poem ends with the two lines that were repeated throughout the entire poem â€Å"Do not go gentle into that good night, Rage Rage against the dying of the light† lines 18 and 19 the speaker is begging his father to not submit to death but to fight it every step of the way. Its true: microwave emissions from outer space help give a peek back at the infancy of the cosmos.   Hunting Down Microwave Signals A fascinating set of objects emits microwaves in space. The closest source of nonterrestrial microwaves is our Sun. The specific wavelengths of microwaves that it sends out are absorbed by our atmosphere. Water vapor in our atmosphere can interfere with the detection of microwave radiation from space, absorbing it and preventing it from reaching Earths surface. That taught astronomers who study microwave radiation in the cosmos to put their detectors at high altitudes on Earth, or out in space.   On the other hand, microwave signals that can penetrate clouds and smoke can help researchers study conditions on Earth and enhances satellite communications. It turns out that microwave science is beneficial in many ways.   Microwave signals come in very long wavelengths. Detecting them requires very large telescopes because the size of the detector needs to  be many times greater than the radiation wavelength itself. Additionally, these black hole engines can create massive jets of plasma that also glow brightly at microwave wavelengths. Some of these plasma structures can be larger than the entire galaxy that contains the black hole. Such radiation had been predicted in the early 20th century, but no one had done anything about searching it out. The scientists 1964 measurements showed a dim wash of microwave radiation across the entire sky. It now turns out that the faint microwave glow is a cosmic signal from the early universe. Penzias and Wilson went on to win a Nobel Prize for the measurements and analysis they made that led to the confirmation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Eventually, astronomers got the funds to build space-based microwave detectors, which can deliver better data. For example, the Cosmic Microwave Background Explorer (COBE) satellite  made a detailed study of this CMB beginning in 1989. Since then, other observations made with the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) have detected this radiation. The CMB is the afterglow of the big bang, the event that set our universe in motion. It was incredibly hot and energetic. As the newborn cosmos expanded, the density of the heat dropped. Basically, it cooled, and what little heat there was got spread over a larger and larger area. Today, the universe is 93 billion light-years wide, and the CMB represents a temperature of about 2.7 Kelvin. Edgar Allan Poe wrote many literary works and had many tragedies in his life. Edgar Allan Poe’s life started in poverty, became better during his adopted years, and once again fell into poverty. Edgar Allan Poe inspired many people with his haunting poetry and short stories. One of his best known poems is â€Å"The Raven.† In this poem he is represented as a lonely fellow in his bedroom, longing for his lost love. Some say this poem is a metaphor for his close friends and family dying. Edgar Allan Poe had a rough life that resulted in many inspiring poems. (Hallqvist 1). Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents, Elizabeth and David Poe were both involved in acting careers. When Edgar was two years old, his father mysteriously abandoned his family, leaving Elizabeth Poe with Edgar and his two siblings, Henry and Rosalie to raise on her own. Soon after Edgar’s father leaving, his mother fell ill with tuberculosis. Elizabeth Poe suffered with the disease from October until December 8, 1811 when she died. Later in Edgar’s life, his poems would relate back to December 1811 and its misfortunes. â€Å"And all I loved, I loved alone† (Lange 12). Poe said speaking of the tragedy of his mother’s death. In Huges essay the negro artist, he captured the essence of blacks looking at themselves through the eyes of white America â€Å"But this is the mountain standing in the way of any true Negro art in America- this urge within the race toward whiteness, the desire to pour racial individuality into the mold of American standardization, and to be as little Negro and as much American as possible. . Though Hughes was very optimistic about America and its ability to improve racial tensions the reality of racism was hard to ignore. In I, Too Hughes used a black male servant as a metaphor for African Americans. The actions of the servant reveal the struggle of African Americans as a people who want to be equal to other Americans. The title of I, Too itself suggests that the speaker of the poem believes that he is also an America. The speaker includes himself as one of the many who â€Å"sings America† (line 1). The idea that one â€Å"sings America† reveals a pride in being a citizen of the United States of America. The speaker aware of his â€Å"two-ness,† his two identities of being black and American, expresses the anger of knowing that many people do not acknowledge him as an American. For this reason Hughes allows the speaker a response to those who do not believe blacks to be Americans worthy of equal opportunities and rights. The speaker identifies himself also as the darker brother (line 2) revealing that he is black (dark skinned) while connecting himself to white Americans who are lighter in complexion. The use of the word ‘brother† helps the speaker to assert that he believes that he is an American symbolizing the common bond he shares with whites. The speaker goes on to say that he is sent away to the kitchen by his employers when company arrives. He implies that he is sent away because â€Å"they† (his white employers) believe his not worthy of being at the table when others are dinning. The inferiority that the speaker feels suggests the feelings of many African Americans who experience racism and prejudice. The speaker then addresses the unfair treatment by his employers in his response in lines 5-7 â€Å"But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. † The speaker laughs at the ridiculousness of his employer’s actions. Hughes lists the rivers in their historical order which helps the reader to understand the legacy of the rivers that have shaped people of African descent. Hughes legacy of providing a voice for African Americans continued throughout his career. In 1951 nearly two decades after writing I, Too in which he addressed the issue of racism Hughes revisited the pain associated with being African American in Theme for English B. Hughes explores the relationship between an African American student and his white teacher. The poem reveals how race affects the African American’s self-identity. The speaker of the poem first reveals his instructor’s command â€Å"Go home and write a page tonight/ And let that page come out of you-Then, it will be true† (Hughes, 1951). The student questions the assignment revealing his hesitation to complete it. In the next stanza Hughes reveals the speaker’s identity. The speaker reveals that he is a colored college student; and that he is the only colored student in class. This assertion helps the reader to understand that this student believes that he is different from his peers and his instructor because of his race. As the speaker ponders his age and his experiences he realizes some of the things that reveal his self-identity. As the speaker continues he lists the many things that contribute to his identity. In lines 24 and 25 the speaker even recognizes that in some ways he is like people from other races. In his self-analysis the speaker realizes that though he is not white and his instructor is white he need not avoid what is true about their relationship. The truth is that they are both American as Hughes state in line 33 and there are times when African Americans do not want to be associated with white Americans and vice versa. The speaker accepts his reality and is made aware that in being African American he is able to learn from his white instructor. The speaker seems more satisfied when he realizes that the instructor can learn from him as well. In all three poems Hughes accomplished the task of giving African Americas a poetic voice. This voice allowed the pride of one’s heritage, the anger and frustration about social injustices, and the pain associated with being African American to become a part of American Literature. A true market economy is free of governmental influence, collusion and other external interference. We also call it a laissez faire style. The individuals and private sector firms make major decision about production and consumption. Thats a private ownership of resources. The price and market systems are used to coordinate and direct economy activity. Consumers would determine and influence the producers decisions to produce goods. In this form of economic organization, firms, motivated by the desire to maximize profit, buy inputs and produce and sells output. Household, armed with their factor incomes, go to markets and determines the demand for commodities. The interaction of firms supply and household demand then determines the prices and quantities of goods. Command economy is an economy where supply and price are regulated by the government rather than market forces. Government planners decide which goods and services they want produced and how they are distributed. Sometimes we call it centrally planned economy. That is a public ownership of all recourse. Decision making is through central economic planning. Everything is controlled by the government. Mixed economy is an economy system in which both the private enterprise and a degree of state monopoly coexist. All modern economics are mixed where means of production are shared between the private and public sector. We also called it a dual economy system. Mixed economy is a dominant form of economic organization in noncommunist countries. Yes, I agree that mixed economy is the best of all the three system because in a mixed type economy, both, the private ownership as well as the state takes part in the means of production, distribution and other type of economic activities. The mixed economy allows private participation in the field of production in an environment of competition with an objective of attaining profit. On the contrary following to the socialism features it includes public ownership in production for maximizing social welfare. Simply in such type of economy there is the presence of private economic freedom with centralized planning with a common goal of avoiding the problems associated with both capitalism as well as socialism. In this system, the freedom in the economic activities are influenced by the government regulation and licensing policies.
